The Szontagh Manor House in Hegyeshalom is for sale.
Hegyeshalom is located 170 km from Budapest and 50 km from Győr, in the westernmost corner of the country, near the Austrian and Slovak borders. Bratislava is only 15 minutes away by car.
The Szontagh family name has been mentioned in sources since the 14th century; they originally lived in Saxony, where they held knightly rank. The Hegyeshalom branch of the family can be traced back to the Igló and Zabar lines. Between 1911 and 1925, Jenő Szontagh became the owner of the property in the settlement and the builder of the historicist-style manor house, which also incorporates neoclassical elements. Between 1910 and 1917, he served as the Lord Lieutenant of Moson County, and it was around this time that he built the manor house. Its floor plan follows an L-shape, with a main facade featuring 4 columns and a pedimented portico, between which 4 large windows are situated, and a double door provided access to the inner salon. The design of the manor house also followed the main characteristics of the architectural style; the large spaces were adapted to the noble and landowning lifestyle, meaning they were also suitable for entertaining guests. The members of the Szontagh family enjoyed the beauties of rural life here.
Since the late 1980s, the current owners have renovated the property to meet contemporary needs and have continuously focused on its refurbishment and preservation. The most recent comprehensive renovation was carried out in 2012. At that time, the roof tiles (Bramac) and gutters were replaced, new doors and windows were installed, and a new central heating system with radiators was established. The electrical and plumbing systems were replaced, new coverings were installed, a built-in kitchen was created, and the entire exterior facade of the house was also renovated. Water supply is provided by a well drilled on the plot, and hot water by an electric boiler.
The plot is 5000 square meters, with beautiful trees and a landscaped garden. In the courtyard, there is also a historic stable with cast-iron columns.
The residential building, totaling 120 square meters, features an open-plan living room-kitchen-dining area, 2 large, separate bedrooms, a spacious bathroom, and a 20-square-meter covered terrace in front of the house. Additionally, a small studio apartment with a separate entrance, consisting of 1 room, a kitchen, and a bathroom, has also been created.
The walls are 70 cm thick, providing a pleasantly cool climate in summer, while the thick walls retain heat in winter. The property is not classified as a historical monument, allowing for free modification.
The manor house has been featured in Magyar Villák magazine, as well as in the book series collecting Hungarian historical castles and manor houses.
